“The good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it.”
This is a quote from Tyson. It’s probably one of the stupidest things he’s ever said yet it gets quoted incredibly often. Science isn’t true or false, science is a process by which we learn more about the universe. He meant so say that “The good thing about science is that it’s good at finding facts about the universe whether or not you believe in it”.
This is apparently meant to be a dig at religion which he seems to think that religious people believe that if you lack belief there will be no consequences. But it’s just not true. Hence a religious person could say “The good thing about religion is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it.”
Science and religion are opposed – you can’t be a scientist if you believe in religion. They directly contradict each other. Science makes a very small number of assumptions about the universe then builds more and more knowledge. Religion makes a very large number of assumptions and is disinterested in accumulating more knowledge.
